An 8,000 sq foot farm in the heart of Brooklyn!
STUDENT FARM PROJECT:
There are thousands of acres of abandoned lots in New York owned by the city. We are starting with a space in Brownsville. At the corner of Sutter and Rockaway Avenue, across from Public School 323, is our sunny 8,000 square foot corner lot, currently full of weeds and trash. We will transform this lot into a urban teaching farm that will beautify the neighborhood, educate local youth, and provide a source of fresh produce for the community.
FARMER:
Nora Painten is a farmer and food lover. She has worked the land professionally for over 4 years and has been working with kids in Brownsville, Brooklyn for the past year. It is her dream to transform every inch of sunny, idle land in the city into food-bearing and community-brightening space.
DESIGNERS:
We have been working closely with growingCities, designers Devin Lafo and Saranga Nakhooda who have collaborated with us to design a truly lovely garden plan. They are also sharing their construction skills with us for the big build. They have been a huge asset – check out their work!
